UK-based lighting rental company HSL supplied lighting equipment for a very popular recent UK theatre tour of "Scrooge", featuring 8 Robe ColorSpot 1200 ATs and four ColorWash 1200s.
The lighting designer was Nick Richings, one of the UK’s best known theatre specialists, and the operator and chief LX for the tour was Tom Wright. The show was produced by Bill Kenwright.
The Robe’s were worked hard to produce a variety of effects. Six of the eight ColorSpots were rigged overhead on the house bars, with the other two on the front truss, and the four ColorWash fixtures were hung on side ladders, used for side-fill and cross stage lighting . All the effects like set and gobo washes and movement were done utilising the Robes.
"Scrooge"’s lighting incorporated a dynamic range of looks and scenes, from moody and murky tones at the start of the show to brighter, more colourful and up tempo scenes at the end. There were also a series of ghostly episodes that were lit accordingly.
It was the first time that Wright had used Robes, and he though they were excellent, “Bright and very smooth” he comments in addition to offeirng plenty of features. He also remarked on how reliable they had been on the road.
Mike Oates, the account handler for HSL and adds, “We’re regularly putting Robe fixtures out on our theatre tours and everyone loves them. Yes, they are proving extremely reliable – and that’s a must for any touring context. They are also versatile creative tools”.
